M.I.A. - Paper Planes

Just to let you know, I have no idea what kind of authority "Pineapple Express" has to play this song in their stoner-ruled trailer. The movie seems cool, but the song got popular due to its use to the movie. So...you know, anyone who knew this song before that trailer came out, awesome.

"All I wanna do is *BANG BANG BANG*, and *KACHING*...take your money". What kind of indecent person would write this in our country's time of crisis? M.I.A. would! And I'm glad she did. It seems controversial, although it hasn't been blocked from the radio. Shooting people and taking their money sounds pretty serious...but hey, does this song sound serious itself?

I actually have an Entertainment Weekly magazine (#1009, September 5, 2008, two ladies of 90210 at the front) with an interview from M.I.A. I know not a lot of magazines can be reliable, but this one isn't always wrong...plus it gives you an idea that the whole song is really her sort of joke.

EW: You had to cancel a festival performance last year because of visa problems. Is it true "paper Planes" was inspired by your experience with the immigration authorities?

M.I.A.: I'd just gotten into New York after waiting a long time, and that's why I wrote it, to have a dig. It's about people driving cabs all day and living in a shitty apartment and appearing threatening to society, but not being so.

EW: What's the significance of the gunshots and the cash-register rings on the track?

M.I.A.: You can apply it on a street level and go, Oh, you're tlaking about somebody robbing you. But it could be a much bigger idea: Someone's selling guns and making money. Companies that manufacture guns - that's probably the biggest moneymaker in the world.

Kevin Rudolf ft. Lil' Wayne - Let It Rock

"When I arrive, I bring the fire to make you come alive..."

Probably one of the catchiest songs of this year, especially from such a mysterious person. You may know the guy as you would know Timbaland; working behind the scenes with Justin Timberlake, the Black Eyed Peas, and Nelly Furtado. He disrupts the music scene with this track featuring one of the biggest hip hop artists of our time, Lil' Wayne.

What can we say about this song? It is damn right catchy. What does it mean? No idea.

The album that the song's featured on, "In This City", is a "conceptual album that follows the story of [his] experiences. It's like a coming of age story in NYC." (check out the Billboard bio on http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/breakenter/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003861198 ).

You might also know that the guy is pretty much a mysterious guy. Look him up on Google, you won't find much pictures of him. Unlike Timbaland, he doesn't feature in the videos that he helped produce the music for.

Although it's hard to find a direct interview that mentions about the meaning, we can find out about the guy.

Interviewer: You know, several people tend to think that there's always this enigma around you, because there's not that many pictures, information floating around, but you know, here you are, taking everything by the storm...so did you purposely try to stay out of the limelight?

Kevin Rudolf: This song caught on so fast...you know, the song, the airplay, the iTunes sale, and everything that was going on in that world was ahead of anything that was done marketing-wise, which I love, because it proves that the music's speaking for itself...which is what the album is about. It's not a marketing scheme, like 'Look at me, I'm a star' and 'Oh, by the way, look at me write some songs while I'm at it', you know. This is like a real project, and it's authentic, and and I'm just proud to show it to the world."

These are one of those times where you have to apply his intentions to this song. First single for him, wanting it to speak for him. What does he say?

"I see your dirty face,
High behind your collar
What is done in vain,
Truth is hard to swallow
So you pray to God,
To justify you live a lie, live a lie, live a lie"

So there's a "dirty face" hiding behind a collar. Someone wearing a collar would probably signify someone's who famous or rich, and that they're living a lie, probably by not being themselves. Rudolf talks about how authentic he wants to be, so this "dirty face" would be someone who's not being themselves in order to reach fame.

"And you take your time,
And you do your crime
Well you made your bed, I'm in mine"

Taking time to do the crime. Making a bed...hmm, well, I think it's building up a reputation that would be a "crime" to Rudolf, and that he's comfortably living in his life well the "dirty face" is not.

"Because when I arrive, I'll bring the fire
Make you come alive
I can take you higher
What this is, forgot?
I must now remind you
Let it rock, let it rock, let it rock"

The chorus would make sense that once you have the other verses down.

"Now the son's disgraced
He, who knew his father
When he cursed his name
Turned, and chased the dollar
But it broke his heart
So he stuck his middle finger
To the world, to the world, to the world"

So, the disgraced son is ashamed from the lie his father ("dirty face") has set up for him. He was led to believe that money was important ("chasing the dollar"), but only ended up in disappointment. He therefore turned away the familiy ethics and decided to do what he wanted to do ("stuck his middle finger to the world").

"You take your time
And you stand in line
Well you'll get what's yours, I got mine"

Taking time by standing in line. Be patient, don't be crappy or lazy, and you'll eventually get what you deserve.

Here's Weezy's verses:
"Yeah. Wayne's world, Planet rock
Panties drop, And the top
And she gunna rock till the camera's stop
I sing about angels like Angela, (rock!)
And Pamela, (rock!)
And Samantha, (rock!)
And Amanda,
And Tamera. (what?)

I'm in here like, 'Bitch, what's up?'
Mechanic me, I can fix you up
I can fuck you up, I can fuck you down
Shawty, we can go wherever, just pick a town
And my jewelry is louder than an engine sound
Big ass rocks like underground,
Dirty like sex that's on the ground...

...I'm back like I forgot somethin',
I'm somethin'
Rulin' rock rubbin', rap runnin'
Miles like it's trying to get a flat stomach
Like Wayne the personal trainer
My aim is perfect, I'll bang you
Period, like the remainder"

Often times, when you have songs like this, the rapper would go along with what the artist was trying to say. I mean, Lil' Wayne could be continuing what Rudolf was saying about how he doesn't want to live a lie. But I think it's clearer to see that Lil' Wayne is the "dirty face", per se, because he's already big in the game. He's talking about how he's got the women, how big his bling is, whatever. It's his world, and he's just explaining it.

Here's the last verse to the line:
"I wish I could be,
As cool as you
And I wish I could say,
The things you do
But I can't and I won't live a lie
No, not this time"

Rudolf plays guitar, and he has that rock band sort of background. To rap like Lil' Wayne would be a lie to him, because he's not a rapper. He's who he wants ot be. He wishes he could be as great as Lil' Wayne is, but he'd rather do it by "waiting in line" and getting what he deserves at the end.

And now the chorus:
"Because when I arrive,
I'll bring the fire
Make you come alive
I can take you higher
What this is, forgot?
I must now remind you
Let it rock, let it rock, let it rock"

Even if you might forget his name, remember to let whatever you feel right rock. Meaning of the song? Even though you may not know him, just remember that if you do, it's the authentic him. He can't be as famous as Lil' Wayne, but he'll be sure to let himself rock whatever is needed to be rocked. This would an interpretation. I wouldn't know, for sure, if this is what Rudolf intended.

Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love

This year's jam, fer sure. As Vh1 said, the singer with a shoulder to cry on. This song emphasized more on her vocals, especially after winning X Factor. You can hear the drums, but it doesn't overpower what she has to sing about what bleeding love feels like.

And, of course, it's not about cutting someone to find out that it's love that's pouring out.

"So, 'Bleeding Love' is kinda a different take on a love song. I think that love isn't always, you know, sweetness and romance; it's sometimes it's quite painful, and it's just about someone's who's kinda fell in love with someone that's been hurt before, but is still kinda giving their role, and doesn't care what anyone thinks, even if it's a bad situation, they're still in love with that someone."

You can hear Leona Lewis and her lovely British accent on the Z100 interview in April, along with the guys criticizing her diet:

Introduction

You have SongMeanings, you have SongFacts, but if you need something that gets to the point of the meaning of songs, there's this site. IDKMUSIK, of course.

Introductions are hard to do, so I'll just list songs, their lyrics, and what they mean. Artists sometimes would talk about their meanings through video blogs and interviews as well, so it helps putting up videos. The biggest challenge is being able to support this for a while.
